The Four Gospels

The four New Testament Gospels are the principal sources of our information about the life and work of Jesus, and thus have a unique importance in the Christian tradition. Although they are witnesses to the faith of the Early Church rather than historical biographies in the modern sense, nevertheless they do provide an excellent idea of the public ministry of Jesus and of the faith of his apostles and disciples. During our February Adult Education Programs this year, we shall discuss their individual features and their combined value for us today.

These programs will be between the masses on Sunday mornings and will begin at 9:30.

February 4: The Gospel according to Mark

On the first Sunday of this series Father Edmund Hussey will open our Adult Education series with a discussion of the Gospel according to Mark, which is the earliest of the four New Testament Gospels. Many scholars have said that this Gospel is focused around a Messianic Secret. The Messianic Secret was that Jesus the Messiah will not make his followers prosperous and powerful but will instead lead them with him through death to resurrection.

February 11, 2017: The Gospel according to Matthew

On the second Sunday of this series Father Hussey will discuss the Gospel according to Matthew which gives us the ethical principles of the Christian life, especially in the celebrated Sermon on the Mount. Matthew’s Gospel tells how we are to live as Christians.

February 18, 2017: The Gospel according to Luke

On the third Sunday of this series Father Hussey will discuss the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles which are   two parts of one book and which give us the first history of the Church and helps us understand how Christianity fits into the entire history of salvation.

February 25, 2017: The Gospel according to John

On the fourth and final Sunday of our February Adult Education Program Father Edmund Hussey will discuss the Gospel according to John, which is the fourth and last of the four New Testament Gospels and which proclaims that Jesus is not only an important figure in our past but is still with today in our daily lives.
