OUR SUMMER 2025 BOOK/READING SOCIAL GATHERING
It is that enjoyable, happy time again! Our parish’s Summer Book/Reading Social Program is going to start soon. We typically come together every Wednesday evening at 6:30 for nine (9) weeks of the summer, in the Rectory. We don’t start before school is out and we end before the next school-year begins.
Our first gathering is June 4th. Right now, the book planned for discussion is The Devil’s Best Trick: How the Face of Evil Disappeared by Randall Sullivan. He is a journalist and author, having come to my attention with his best-selling book of 2004, The Miracle Detective: An Investigation of Holy Vision focusing primarily on the Vatican investigation of the visions and visionaries in Medjugorje. Randall Sullivan converted to Roman Catholicism in 1995.
According to the Amazon website, The Devil’s Best Trick is supposed to be available in a paperback edition on May 25th. It appears that it is also available in an audio format.
I will try to supplement our reading with handouts from such works as Sin in the Sixties: Catholics and Confession, 1955-1975; Sin: A History; Sin: The Early History of an Idea; ‘In the Beginning …’: A Catholic Understanding of the Story of Creation and the Fall; and perhaps exerts from the writings of such great, early Church Fathers as Origin and St. Augustine. Don’t be daunted: such handouts are meant for consideration at home and ordinarily are not discussed among ourselves.
Seriously consider coming this summer. We really do have a good time. I welcome everyone and especially hope some new additional parishioners join the 25 or 30 “regulars.” Food and drink are in abundance!
